James and the Giant Peach – Be transported into the enchanted world of Roald Dahl’s ‘James and the Giant Peach’ at the NCT – a magical story for all ages, 10 Nov-23 Dec. The National Children’s Theatre presents Roald Dahl’s ‘James and the Giant Peach’, the delightful story of James, his magical peach and the best friends a boy could have. ‘James and the Giant Peach’ is a tale of a young orphan boy fleeing from his two conniving aunts, who meets an old man who gives him a bag containing the strongest magic in the world. James spills contents of the bag on an old peach tree and watches in amazement as the tree grows a peach which keeps on growing until it is as huge as a house. He steps inside this magical peach and meets five larger than life garden bugs. Together they embark on a magnificent journey taking them from the cliffs of Dover, across the Atlantic Ocean all the way to New York City. Booking essential. Story Time – Free story time for 4-8 year-olds at Love Books in Melville, Sat 14 at 10h00 (younger children are welcome if accompanied by their parents). Let the kids attend a free story-time at Love Books, while you browse the Bamboo Farmers’ Market in Melville on Saturday 14. The Bamboo Farmers’ Market is a small rooftop market with loads of local and organic produce, straight from local producers. You can expect to find farm milk and butter, free-range eggs, fair-trade coffee, vegetables and more. Whilst you’re browsing the market, your children can enjoy a free storybook reading at 10h00 at Love Books, situated on the Lower Level of the shopping centre. Love Books’ storytellers relate everything from fairy tales to traditional African folklore, classics to brand new stories.
Red Riding Hood – an interactive puppet show of this classic tale at Kinder Theatre in Emmarentia, Saturday 14 at 10h00. A-maize-ing Mazes’ Moonlight Maze – Their main attraction is a giant maze – either their ‘Elemental maze’, constructed from reeds, which is open from June to December, or their ‘Maize maze’, open from February to June (mielies are a seasonal crop!). After completion of the maze, there are fun puzzles and smaller mazes available in the courtyard. The maze takes on a completely different personality at night – where else can you wander around outside in the dark in Johannesburg? Gates open at 17h15, entry into the maze is at 18h15 (no late entries), and everyone is out of the maze by 20h00. The security gates are closed and locked between 18h15 and 19h45. Children under 15 need to be accompanied by an adult into the maze. The venue is not licensed, but there is a coffee shop which is open for cold drinks, teas/coffees and ice creams. Fairy Dust – Fairy Dust is an exciting and larger-than-life hour-long family magic show by illusionist Vicus Cruywagen. Children and adults are transported to an interactive world of magic, illusion, comedy and mystery. Vicus is pestered throughout the show by a frantic fairy, Twinkle. Trains, trains and more trains – Take a picnic to the Rand Society of Model Engineers in Florida on Sunday 15. Free entry – kids can enjoy a mini steam train ride (R 10). The track comprises two circular loops, the shorter of the two is about 450 metres long, while the longer is about 850 metres long. The total running surface of the track is almost 1,6 km’s. The vertical height difference between the highest and lowest points in the track work is 5 metres. Other track features are, a single track concrete bridge, two single track steel structured bridges, a double track 2-span steel structured bridge, and two parallel tunnels. There is a small museum with old engines on display. R 10 per ride.
