Giselle – Joburg Ballet will begin its 2016 performance season with Giselle, widely acknowledged as one of the most beautiful classical ballets ever created, from 8 – 17 April at Joburg Theatre, joining many companies worldwide in marking the ballet’s 175th anniversary. Walking Tour – Johannesburg Country Club – Explore this relatively little known but idyllic corner of Johannesburg by spending an autumn afternoon enjoying the superb gardens, and hearing something of the history of the Club so closely tied to that of Johannesburg. We will visit the Secretary’s Residence and its lovely garden; we will view the original squash court with its antique, but very effective air-conditioning system and pay our respects at the Garden of Remembrance. The old stable, where Members’ horses were attended to, and where the polo ponies and hunters were stabled, will be seen, and we will hear about the original spruit (still running) and the lake that developed out of the farm dam where the beaus of Johannesburg punted with their young ladies. Zoo Trot – The Zoo trot this week takes on two Zoo Trot events. The first one is in aid of Autism awareness and starts at 07h00
The Second Zoo Trot is the normal monthly Zoo Trot at Johannesburg Zoo and this starts at 07h30. You and your family can join other zoo trotters, running to beat your own record, or walk with family and friends at your own pace to reduce stress, build stamina, keep fit or just socialise. The Trot is open to young and old – some parents even push their babies in strollers on the walk. The trot consists of a 5 or 10 km fun run or walk inside the zoo grounds. Direction markers are placed along the route to guide you and zoo staff is present to help you stay on route. The route passes some of the most popular zoo animals such as the lions, elephants, giraffe, monkeys and one of most resilient animals: Phila, the Black Rhino. Registration opens at 07h00, the Trot begins at 07h30 and ends at 10h00. The special reduced entry fee is R 50 each and children under the age of three get in free. For every three consecutive trots completed, you will receive a special Zoo Trot medal, featuring one of the zoo animals. After the walk/run, Zoo trotters can enjoy a scrumptious breakfast at the zoo’s Cafe Fino or bring picnic baskets and enjoy the rest of the day at the Johannesburg Zoo.
Three Koppies Hike – A three-hour hike of about 10km across all three sections of Melville Koppies. R50 per adult, R20 for children over six only. Bring water and a snack.
