A special outing for school children to the Roodepoort Theatre, a partnership with the Reach For A Dream Foundation and a performance in Hillbrow all form part of Joburg Ballet’s activities celebrating Youth Day on 16 June.
Preceding Joburg Ballet’s short four-performance season of Ballets for Winter at the Roodepoort Theatre from 17 to 19 June, the company will host over 300 learners at the theatre on Youth Day. Bringing children from 16 schools in previously disadvantaged communities on the West Rand into an exhilarating theatre environment, the company’s Fun Day at the Ballet will share the joy and excitement of dance with young people who may never have experienced live performance.
The Fun Day at the Ballet will be an outing with a difference, including a performance of Ballets for Winter, a chance to meet the dancers, plus party treats for all learners, under the entertaining guidance of Joburg Ballet’s Keke Chele as MC. Joburg Ballet is grateful to the Gauteng Department of Education for the support that has made the Fun Day at the Ballet possible through sponsorship of transport and refreshments.
On Youth Day Joburg Ballet will also partner with the Reach For A Dream Foundation, which encourages children to use their dreams to fight life-threatening illnesses. By welcoming a five-year old girl on stage at the Roodepoort Theatre, the company will make her dream to dance on stage come true.
In another part of Gauteng, children from the Joburg Ballet School will perform at the Hillbrow Theatre as part of Hillbrow Theatre Project’s celebrations to mark the 40th anniversary of the Soweto uprising, running from 11.00am – 1.00pm.
Immediately following Youth Day, from Friday 17 to Sunday 19 June, Joburg Ballet presents Ballets for Winter at the Roodepoort Theatre for four performances only. Ballets for Winter is a collection of three classical and contemporary works showcasing SA’s world class ballet company. After acclaimed performances of Les Sylphides during 2015, this great classic with its evocative music by Chopin, comes to Roodepoort for the first time. The programme also includes the spectacular showpiece, Grand Pas Classique, an impressive classical pas de deux for a ballerina and her partner, and a new contemporary work by admired SA choreographer Kelsey Middleton titled She Stumbled And Fell. Ms Middleton’s Last Supper was one of the hits of the 2015 ballet season.
Combine your visit to the ballet with brunch, lunch or supper at the Roodepoort Theatre’s restaurant, Stages. The restaurant suggests you make reservations by calling on 011 674 1356/7/8/9.
